Employers for Carers was delighted to recognise Carers Week 2009 with ‘Equality for Carers’, its first Networking Event for members held on 9 June 2009. Supported by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and hosted at BT Centre in London by Employers for Carers Chair Caroline Waters, speakers included: Trevor Phillips, Chair of EHRC; Janice Shersby from the Government Equalities Office; Dr Michael O'Donnell, Chief Medical Officer, Unum; and Lucy McLynn, the solicitor who represented Sharon Coleman in the recent landmark legal case.
Baroness Royall, the then Leader of the House of Lords and Government Spokesperson for Equality, who was unable to attend the event, sent the following message of support: ‘I wholeheartedly support this event and the wider work of the Employers for Carers forum. Its aims and activities focus on the incredibly important issue of provisions for carers in the workforce and, as such, should be welcomed and embraced.’
Over 50 representatives from a range of private and public sector organisations enjoyed the opportunity to discuss topical issues with speakers and network informally and feedback from the event was very positive from employers who attended.
